Media Balance & Well-Being: Maintaining a balance between how much time students spend doing online or digital work, and how much time is spent collaborating with peers, and doing hands-on work; both in the classroom and at home.
Privacy & Security: I plan on teaching middle school, so it is very important that I emphasize the importance of online safety and security when searching anything online. A mini lesson before doing a research project will be beneficial in helping students to avoid finding anything inappropriate online.
Digital Footprint & Identity: What you post online will stay online forever. For middle schoolers it may be hard to imagine that, so teaching them about both negative and positive impacts of people's digital footprint and their identity that comes from that.
Relationships & Communication: Building strong relationships with students by gaining a mutual respect for one another, and by teaching proper online etiquette and communication skills when talking to peers and teachers.
Cyberbullying, Digital Drama, & Hate Speech: The importance of teaching cyberbullying is just as important as teaching bullying in the classroom. Neither will be tolerated in my classroom. This goes along with relationships and communication; communication should always remain positive and never bring someone down.
News & Media Literacy: I will teach my students that not everything you see on the internet is factual or necessarily true. Cross checking information will be beneficial to determining what is real and what is fake online.
